Trying to evacuate by car causes traffic congestion and is an obstruction to fire engines and ambulances carrying Out emergency rescue activities.
When evacuating wear comfortable, functional clothing and carry a minimum of belongings (emergency pack) on your back.
Each municipality designates refuge points and safe evacuation routes: make sure you know where they are.

Beware of Tsunami, tidal waves.
A tsunami may hit in advance of any tsunami warning.
If you feel a strong earthquake (of seismic intensity 4 or more), or a weak tremor that seems to last quite a while, get away from the sea shore immediately and hurry to a safe place such as higher ground.
It is also important to confirm tidal wave information on the radio.
(In the Hokkaido Nansei-Oki earthquake of 1994, the tsunami attacked only 5 minutes after the earthquake.)
